How to Store and Repurpose Your Jewelry

1. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Don’t store your jewelry in a cold closet or hot attic. Instead, store your jewelry at room temperature out of direct sunlight. A location with consistent low humidity is ideal to prevent tarnishing and discoloration.

2. Store Diamonds and Other Gemstones Alone

Diamonds are the hardest gemstone on the market, and because of this they can scratch other materials. In addition, some gemstones are also very hard. This is why a simple rule to follow is to separate diamonds, other gemstones and pearls. Pearls should also not be stored with hard metals.

3. Choose a Jewelry Box or Tray with a Soft Lining

Many hard plastic and wooden jewelry organizers are fine for cheaper jewelry, but for fine jewelry a soft lining is a must. This prevents the damaging of your jewelry when you take it off and quickly drop it on your dresser after a long day!

Separate compartments are also convenient to prevent jewelry from tangling.

4. Use Hooks to Hang Necklaces

This is pretty self-explanatory, but it’s an easy way to prevent necklaces from tangling and scratching each other. Buy a jewelry stand or DIY with a cork board and push-pins for the hooks.

5. Repurpose Your Jewelry

Now that you’ve organized and stored your jewelry properly, you might find some old pieces you don’t wear anymore. Did you know you can repurpose your jewelry and make something you will love and actually wear?  We love to restyle new pieces out of old cherished or forgotten accessories. It is also a heartfelt way to make your dream piece of jewelry out of a loved one’s passed down pieces, so you can always think of them when you look at it and be connected to your ancestors.

Let’s get creative! You can convert a ring to a necklace, or repurpose diamonds from a ring to make a new wedding band. Here are some before and after's of pieces we have restyled to make the dream piece of jewelry for our clients. Set up an appointment in our showroom and bring photos and inspiration of your dream piece, or work with us to completely reimagine a unique and unforgettable custom treasure.
